A Squash and a Squeeze

Illustrated by Axel Scheffler

Wise old man, won’t you help me, please?

“a bit of a classic… a goat on the bed and a cow on the table tapping out a jig? My readers collapsed in heaps, and then had to have it read again. And again.” The Guardian

This was my first book, published in 1993, but it started its life earlier still, as a song which I wrote for children’s television. Click here to watch Malcolm and me singing the song.

The words tell the story from the little old lady’s point of view, but I love how Axel’s pictures let you see how the animals feel.

Here is a picture of me dressed up as the little old lady in my stage show, “Gruffalos, Ladybirds and Other Beasts”.
